Woops my website is down, what do I do? (Failover)

Having your website down can really cost you money!  Whether you make money from selling items on your site or you just make money from an affiliate link.  One solution is to have a failover set up.  If you rely on the income from your site a failover can be a lifesaver.  Many providers guaranty 98% up time, and probably utilize this, but if you want to be sure to have 100% uptime this is the way to go.

To set up failover you first need two locations (hosts) for your website.   My preference is that they are no where near each other.  Something like California and Europe is ideal – but may not be practical, so different parts of the country would be the next best solution.

You then need copies of your site at both locations.  If your site includes a database it becomes more complicated…  I would suggest you may want to get the help of a ‘techy’ if you are wanting a database that is kept up to date with changes.  (You need Database Replication in this case)  Where as any change to either site will cause a change to the matching site simultaneously.

Keep in mind that any change to one of the sites must also occur to the other.

Next you need something set up to switch the ‘pointer’ to the other site when your primary site goes down.  I’ve used DNSMadeEasy in the past.  DNS Made Easy watches your site and as soon as it finds it down it swaps it’s entry to the second site.  As it keeps checking, it will swap back to the primary when the site goes back up.

The reason for different geographical locations is that if your primary site is hit by a substantial failure – something like a large power outage, both sites may be affected.

Using this scenario you may still have a short amount of down time while the switch takes affect, but it should reduce the down time to a very small amount.

Apps Review (None were keepers)

Image representing Whrrl as depicted in CrunchBase

I recently looked at (and deleted) most of these apps for iPhone….

Daily Deals:
There weren’t any deals in our area. I’m not sure how it would be if living somewhere else, but for Bowling Green it wasn’t a keeper.

Whrrl:
Couldn’t figure it out.

Pose:
Looked like it mean to be a pinterest type site, but not as addicting. I didn’t see anything in the beginning that I might want to come back for. It goes with the site Pose.com….

Sticky Note:
This one is just post its. Again, not one that held my interest, but if you like to leave notes to yourself this might be a good app for you.

Wea Pro HD (the free Version)
Includes temperature and basic weather information. It didn’t include radar so I’m sticking with The Weather Channel’s app.

uTeach:
There was only one school listed. It’s going. If that one school is the school you work with or attend then it would be worth checking out, but since it wasn’t for me – It’s being deleted.

Dealing with BedBugs

Adult bed bug, Cimex lectularius

Image via Wikipedia

It seems bedbugs are everywhere anymore! Even the nice hotels!

What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are the common name for Cimex lectularius, a reddish-brown, oval-shaped insect that can grow to a quarter of an inch long. Bed bugs are wingless and survive by sucking blood from a host animal, preferably a human.

Why Are They Called Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs commonly hide in mattresses, carpets, behind peeling paint or wallpaper, and in crevices in wooden furniture. Bed Bugs are nocturnal and typically bite people while they sleep in an infested bed.

Where Did Bed Bugs Come From?
Bed bugs travel surprisingly well, and are quite comfortable stowing away in luggage and even clothing. The bugs are increasingly found hiding in beds, upholInspecting for Bedbugsstered furniture and behind baseboards in urban hotels in America.

What Can You Do to Avoid Bed Bugs?
Look around. Bed bugs are large enough to see. Look particularly under the mattress and in the seams, in and around the bed frame, and along any cracks or peeling paint in the wall or picture frames.  You can also spot droppings from bed bugs, which may be tinged with blood on the mattresses in hotels.
What Should You Do if You Are Bitten by Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs bite exposed skin and leave behind small, red, itchy welts.  The CDC does say that bites from bed bugs can be treated with topical emollients or corticosteroids. You can also take an oral antihistamine. If you are exposed, you may consider treating your home as well. If at a hotel and bitten – wash everything well when you get home before they have a chance to ‘move in’.  Anything that can’t go into the wash should be exposed to extreme heat or cold.

What Should You Do if Bed Bugs Are in Your House?
Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate. They hide well and can go up to a year without feeding.  Most pest control companies are equipped to handle bed bugs. There are a few home remedies you can also use to protect yourself, your clothes and your furniture. Steam and high heat can help. Also seal any mattresses in airtight bags.

When I checked my town in the Bedbug registry I found 5 hotels in bowling green ky with bedbugs:

Ramada Inn
4767 Scottsville Rd Bowling Green, KY

Holiday Inn University Plaza Bowling Green
1021 Wilkinson Trace, Bowling Grn Bowling Green, KY

Super 8
110 Willamette Ln Bowling Green, KY

Best Western-Motor Inn
166 Cumberland Trace Rd Bowling Green, KY

Motel 6

This doesn’t mean every room has bed bugs, but it does mean someone reported at least one room as having them.
